In conversation with our CEO.. the face behind MMAS Foundation
Hello, I am Maddison McKenzie Agama Spencer and I am the founder and CEO of MMAS Foundation.
I have recently just finished my GCSEs at Bedford Greenacre Independent School. I will be starting sixth form in September at Oundle School in Northamptonshire. I will be studying Maths, Economics, Psychology and Physical education.
The journey began when I was 5 years old. After saving up my Christmas and Birthday money I donated it all to a homeless family in Luton with the guidance of my Mum. The family I donated to were victims of a fire in their home, all their possessions, plans and dreams had gone up in smoke. My donation helped give then a second chance. The family were able to meet their needs for beds, bedding, clothing, school uniforms for the children and other basic supplies. It made me realise how much support is required in the community. My Mum then encouraged me to set up my own foundation with the emphasis of helping disadvantaged individuals to improve not only their lives but the lives of others. The foundation was set up in 2012.
I have a lot of childhood memories that make me smile, some of my favourites would be spending nights abroad camping during my time at cubs and scouts, playing games and enjoying the company of family and friends at Christmas times and lastly, participating in sports camps during the summer holidays.
A coach once told me I should strive to become better every single day. This has stuck with me since I was younger and is usually an aim of mine, something that drives me to wake up is the sheer privilege I have compare to many less fortunate children my age. This gives me the energy to wake up and take those opportunities given to me.
This usually depends on the time period of the year. A lot of my free time is spent playing and training for the sports I play. I enjoy going to the gym, preparing healthy meals.
Homework and revision is also a big factor. However I do enjoy going out with friends and binge watching TV.
Some of my favourite hobbies would be playing sports, as I am very competitive. I would say playing sports is one of my biggest hobbies . This mainly came from playing sports for school at such a young age.
I also enjoy drawing, this again came from when I was younger, it is something I definitely still enjoy. If you look at the MMAS logo, its one of my drawings from when I was very little.
Still being in education many of my goals revolve around my grades which will eventually excel me to reach future goals. Some of my current goals would be to get a minimum of AAB in my A level’s. Smaller more short term goals would be to improve as a rugby player and to keep a more consistent and healthier diet. In relation to my professional goals it would be to grow the foundation and work with a wider diversity of the community.
Although very generic I would love to visit America more specifically New York so that I could visit the empire state building see the many skyscrapers and architecture surrounding it. For similar reasons I would also love to visit Tokyo, Japan and to discover the different culture there.
A book gifted to me by a teacher. ‘The outsider’ by Albert Camus. This book gave me a different perspective of people and showed me how intricate life really is.
A movie named ‘Miracle in cell No.7’ also left a lasting impression on me. It opened my eyes to the cruelty in other countries and the privilege many of us have today.
There are many people I look up to. Muhammed Ali for his courage and determination.
Nelson Mandela for his resilience and humbleness and finally Usain Bolt for his dominance and adaption over the years.
We simply want to support and nurture . To inspire, grow and work within wider communities and with individuals who required a direction and a helping hand.
